Set Review ➟ LEGO® 71853 - Jay’s Dragon mech fight
Lately it’s all about mechs. Here’s another new set featuring a couple more from the latest wave of the Ninjago theme. A 4+ set, with 107 pieces and priced at €19.99, which will be available from March. What catches my eye the most are the minifigures. I really like the so-called Mutation Monster!
A couple of bags, a couple of small instruction booklets, and some very cool dark blue saurian legs.
The first to arrive is the character Jay. To be honest, the look reminds me more of a Power Ranger than a ninja – forgive me. Even so, it’s absolutely brilliant! That neon yellow with the blue and such a modern shape feels more at home in a city from a cyber theme. I love it.
Let’s move on to his strange mech, a mix of machine and organic elements. There’s no real secret to it, as you can see in the image. Its simple design makes it excellent for playability. It’s also a toy that stands up quite well to hours of play.
I completely understand these sets when I watch my nearly five-year-old son playing with them. They genuinely enjoy them!
This creature called Mutation Monster really appeals to me. I like it a lot – that ugly oversized head with that hat is brilliant, and the rest of the minifigure is just as good. Is that a heart we can see on the torso? On the other hand, I don’t like this mech at all; I think the legs don’t quite work with the upper section. But… at least it puts up a fight.
It’s a simple build, very modular and relatively sturdy. Certified. It took us at least five minutes to manage to pull one of the mechs apart while staging a tremendous battle.
